    The link doesn’t work for me, but I’m guessing a gas fired water heater is involved here.

    What they would’ve smelled was the natural gas from the fuel supply, not necessarily the carbon monoxide from exhaust fumes if the venting system wasn’t working properly. CO has no odor.
