This brings back memories of digging snow analysis pits, using brushes and credit cards to analyze the snowpack. If you don't know the history of a snowpack, assume the worst. The worst is heavy, wet snow on top of an unstable snowpack.
The very worst will cause climax avalanches, taking out the entire snowpack.

I sometimes envy my friends that do avalanche control. Playing with explosives, what's not to like? This video is from Alaska. On Snoqualmie and Stevens Pass the Howitzers are mounted at fixed locations. Then there's the fun times of dropping live charges from the open door of a helicopter....
