    You let that wrench that you are using to disconnect the hot terminal hit something metal and see if it won’t spark.

    you are correct though. And it won’t create an arc from the cable to the terminal. It will if you do it the other way. Risk of harm is relatively minor though if you do it wrong. So long as you haven’t used a can of starting fluid or alcohol to clean them.
