Never had all 3, Mack 5 main, 2 on right for D/lo .An old 22 White sleeper of Riddells ("Bertha") 5 main, 3 way stick placed between your legs.
Left back Lo, Right back Direct, Right forward OD. Usually used like a 2 speed. Most configuration were OD was stick forward except Mack.
A Mack OD could be back and down on the main. Many of Mack trans rebuilds were due to splitting 5th. Was always told never"pull"an OD.
Cruise level or down grades. Never hauled logs or dirt/gravel. My concept of aux gearing was use a selection to get you out of the woods or pits,
then use a selection of a combo to run with only flipping a couple of logical moves. Also was told to load, get a gear, amd stay in it till out of the pit/woods and up on the road. Kept broken axles to a minimum.

Another weird to me was a GMC I once used a while..5 and 2 speed axle. Split 1,2,3, move lever into 4th Lo, then to 5th Lo, then hi side and lever back to 4th, then to 5th. It works and a good progression .Heard it referred to as "Having a short 4th".

@wore out had a setup as I recall a 6 speed main with a 4 way. I am reasonably sure he did not run all 24 every time he started off.
(Unless showing out leaving a place or coming in to impress. Most embarrassing to mess that up with 3 or 4 drivers standing in view.)
But he always had a gear running its midrange to handle any grade, wind, or other weather conditions.

There is a grade in/near/ past, Pecos TX that our Mack would lack about 100 feet getting to a gain there and had to handle the sticks 5th Lo to 4th D for that 100 or so, not able to move them back quick enough to shift up and go the rest of the way in the higher gear. Pray for a RR.

There is overlap on the high side with a 5 & 4, so 6 & 4 would be even worse. To use all of them would be like two steps forward and one step back!

I would like to know more about a 3 speed axle. Never seen one and of course I heard they were prone to breaking
