    A salute to the man.
Mike, I see the tools lying there and assume you were or had rigged some holder for flowers. I had that situation with my daughters site and stuff would fall over or undo. The various stone or metal vases they offer either fall over, get hit by the mowers or stolen. I hit on something that works well for us.
Take a piece of 4" ID PVC pipe 8" long. In the dirt alongside the stone,(at whatever location you want to set) set it up against the stone, lay a piece of 2 x 6 across top and drive it down some. (Axe or hand sledge will do...) Sink it a ways, pull up, remove the dirt, go back and repeat. You are digging a self post hole. Get it down to about an inch still out. drive it on down LEVEL.
You have a tight fitted, ground level container to insert you flowers. I have them on mine and daughters grave site and they work real well for us. (This Lilly pot is sitting on the pipe at Julies, with a 1/4" dowel stuck thru it to pin. Tell your florist what you are using, they will arrange to fit in )

It's amazing what happens when a State Trooper sits in an active Work Zone. A couple weeks ago one of them was working one on I-70 at Junction City, KS and it was like shooting fish in a barrel. He would sit at the 301, pull them over at the 300, do his deal and run the outer road back to the 301, over and over and over. We were making a round every 30min or so hauling wet batch and I bet he was averaging 2 per hour for close to 5 hours.

I got this idea from someone who put one on my GGG Grandparents headstone. They put a flower in it oh Probly 10 years ago and never returned. No idea who did it. It’s just a short piece of 1/2 inch pvc pipe glued to the headstone. Works well and the flowers are out of the way of the mower dudes who mow at warp speed. I’ll get a picture tomorrow.
