I can’t imagine who’d ever think up something like that

And twice in that time period, I got my order and enough change to refresh it to a full 20. Good times.

Oldest and middle daughters both worked at the local Burger King in high school. Wide counter, had 3 wooden pull out drawers inside.
You walked up. elbowed. excuse me. move please , get in front of one of them. Ordered Whopper, no onion and a Coke. They told you (so much), turned and yelled back into the kitchen what you had said, stuck out a hand, took your money laid it on the counter, pulled the drawer, fished out the change, handed it to you in one hand while seizing your payment amount till you backed away/. NEXT.

I don't recall any registers., but there was some minor device to punch a total and make a receipt, but nothing to figure change...

You came, was hired, tried and if worthy, given a schedule to work. Work varied. There was a station in the kitchen called the Whopper Board.
All Whoppers were built there. You heard the order from front, reached, got, and made and handed it forward with shout of WHOPPER, NO ONION.......Whopper board was sought after, less stress and stayed in one place. However, DISTRON was the truck that brought the stuff.
Girls' had a shift, we picked up at say 10PM. But, would occasionally get a call, Daddy, DISTRON is late and we are just starting to unload it. Everyone worked, did the job, learned how life's unfairness worked in real time.
I credit their working there in that time and atmosphere in making them both very successful in their lives, oldest is 61.

A Sunday School teacher once told that he was 19 before he realized there was anything about religion, other than the King James Bible and 1st Baptist Church in Amory, MS.
I am still that way about hot sauce. Tabasco is it.
