Dating back to 1865, Juneteenth commemorates the day when 250,000 slaves in the state of Texas, which became the last bastion for slavery during the final days of the Civil War, were declared free by the U.S. Army.
Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863, and Juneteenth, the day enslaved people in Texas were told they were free, was June 19, 1865.

The Emancipation Proclamation, issued earlier, had freed enslaved people in Confederate states, but not in loyal Union states like Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri, nor in Texas until after the war ended. The 13th Amendment, which officially abolished slavery, was ratified later in December 1865.
They don’t teach our history any more, history is painful, though I believe it should be taught, it keeps you from making the same mistakes…
