“I consider myself blessed to have been able to have a job, to have been able to get up and report there, draw a paycheck, disburse it for needs and a few wants, stash some for my old age, and still be alive.”

So true here. I never learned to gamble, play cards or the like. Hold no ill feeling of those that do, Daddy never knew how so I didn’t learn. Worked hard for my money comin up and didn’t like to chance it and am a “tightwad” to go with it. Gambling came to town years ago and I saw some people I knew personally go from riches to rags literally, bug got em and lost everything they had business and family. It has a lot to do with personal discipline.
When I was a tyke had a Grandmother lived with us. Took real good care of us all. At the time a person had to sign to buy .22 bullets and Mama would sign for mine every few weeks when She took me to town with Her. I wanted some bullets once and had spent my dollar or so on something else earlier. Asked Mama if She would get me some bullets, asked if I had money, said no Ma’am I do not. She said well you don’t get no bullets. Made up my mind right then that I was never gonna run out of bullet money again. Started saving, went to adding up, She opened me a little savings account at First National Bank up town and made sure I kept putting a little money in it. Through the years if I needed something I would always have to decide if I wanted to draw my money out or make do another way so I wouldn’t spend my bullet money.
I will soon be over 71 and have never drawn on that account, but I know it’s there if I need it. A number of years ago the bank sent me a letter stating they would not accept any more proceeds into that account as it has reached its “maximum allowable”.
Point is, I’m not no better than anybody else, and circumstances are different I realize, but if some people could learn a little discipline and resist impulsive urges with their money they can do a lot with a little.
