A few acres and a back hoe/ drilling auger is a pretty good deterrent for uninvited shenanigans.

That 20 miles you mentioned is a key number for my decision criteria. Wanted to be as far out as possible but with an hour round trip travel time to a well stocked lumber yard/builder supply. Beyond that it was look for a place that Urban and Suburban sprawl would be kept in check till I was too senile to care.

Added bonus for this location is a good local hardware store and an IGA market a bit over 2 miles round trip. But far enough off the highway that they primarily serve the local community, with a city population of about 2500 (was 1500 but they sucked in about 1000 people by annexing some county properties along the state highway into the city limits).

AS a reminder, If looking for more rural life a couple of things to keep an eye out for: not part of an Urban Growth Area, not part of an HOA, and no CC&Rs (Covenants, Conditions And Restrictions). There may be other alphabets soups out there to avoid so that autonomy can be maintained.

It’s a very bittersweet day at the shop— after 19 years the Ol Milwaukee ra-did-I-o shot craps and now we’re wireless— F’n hate it, but it does sound better and it’s a lot louder so the neighbors can enjoy it too so… never mind— it’s bittersweet
