The genious in dispatch wanted me to take a load from SoCal and deliver in Eureka, CA last week. Got upset with me when I told them that was a length restricted route and a conventional tractor with a 53' trailer has absolutely no way to get to Eureka legally. Even with a set of doubles a conventional tractor is still over length. That requires at least a cabover or a single drive axle with a set. Should have heard the lame excuses they came up with.....

You can get there from Redding but not on 101

I lived in the Sacrmento area from '88 til '96. at that time hwy 50 there had a sign that said the opposite. Had Ocean City, Md. miles were the same. Don't know if the sign is still there.

Yeah, 101 at Richardson Grove is the big hangup and the Garberville CHP watch it like hawks.
CalTrans has plans in the works to widen it and straighten it out but the tree huggers are putting up a fight.
You could try to sneak across 36 from Red Bluff but the last guy that tried that had a nervous breakdown somewhere around Dinsmore and abandoned his truck.

EDIT...299 from Redding to Eureka is open to STAA trucks now. They fixed most of the switchbacks on Buckhorn so other than some narrow spots around Burnt Ranch it's pretty good road. Check for weather closures and mudslides before you go.

They re-routed a lot of the switchbacks on Buckhorn. Other than that narrow windy spot near Burnt Ranch it's pretty good going now.
