Looking at research published in 1999, it was forecasted that if an illness caused 89,000 to 207,000 deaths; 314,000 to 734,000 hospitalizations; 18 to 42 million outpatient visits; and 20 to 47 million additional illnesses that it would cost $166 billion dollars, NOT COUNTING the disruption to commerce and society. This was the argument used to support subsidizing flu vaccines. Letting this thing run free would come with an insane price tag.
But let's set that aside and look at what "losing a bunch of the at risk people" would do. Sure it would open up job opportunities, and kids would get their inheritances but it would also cause significant economic shocks. If a company's founder dies, the company's "survival rate" drops by 20% (Many Firms Don't Survive After Owners Die). Some people other than the ceo have an outsized impact in their company. Losing them can wreck havoc - just the institutional knowledge loss alone can cause a company to stagnate.
Your thoughts follow the broken window fallacy. The idea is a kid is out playing ball and breaks a window. Kid/parents have to pay to replace the window which benefits the economy. Thus breaking windows can be a good thing. The fallacy is that while the glazer gets paid for one window the family now has less disposable income and will not buy new clothes and the like. The one time, large expense of the window may actually cause the family to spend less than the are able to out of a sense of fear, thus depressing the economy.
Finally, if we let Covid-19 run free, the overall mortality of the country will rise. If the hospital system gets overwhelmed by covid-19 cases then it cannot deal with broken bones, babies being born, heart attacks, etc. All of a sudden we aren't "trimming the herd" of the at risk crowd but losing otherwise healthy individuals.Sirscrapntruckalot, JolliRoger, 650cat425 and 2 others Thank this. -
