I haven't priced out group 31 batteries, the mechanic told me they were like $185 per battery.

I think your reading too many things that wont apply to a used vehicle @Rocks. Most vehicles come with a minimum 30 day warranty from any dealer. It is called the "Lemon Law" here in Maine. It basically covers your fears of engine/trans. If anything major goes bad in the 30 days of purchase, the dealer must repair or refund your money. Out of the 20 vehicles I have bought, only 2 of them ever needed some form of service. The wifes Dodge neon had a dead squirrel in the blower. And the wife got a Chevy Venture minivan that had a bad fuel rail. Ok, the previous Dodge pickup had a broken mixer door that the dealer repaired. Yet these were things that I discovered with in a week.

The current pickup I bought wholesale. Meaning it has defects that need repairs. I paid $6500 and have so far invested $1500. The truck is worth 18k-22k value. The dealer had to sell it wholesale as it had more than 100k miles and it was older than 10 years.
