Back in the days before the OKC Bombing that type of fertilizer was readily available to just about anyone. We used to use it on the ranch for blasting Beaverdams, tree stumps, bolders, and the like.
Gravel in bottom of jug, fertilizer in top of jug, attach blasting cap and fuse...
Our irrigation ditches were fed directly off the river, and the beaver played hell with water flow every fall. Come spring time we would have to blast dams to restore water flow.
Would walk out onto the middle of the dam, light fuse, toss into the water on the upstream side, about 5 feet from the dam. Water current would push the charge against the bottom of the dam as it sank.
For 1 jug you wanted to be AT LEAST 100 yards away when it went off, 2 jugs about 150 yards was ok. The detonation could very easily be felt through your feet and knees at those distances. And if you knew it was coming you could feel it as far as 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile away.
Dad once blasted a HUGE beaver dam for a family member... The dam was about 100 feet from I-15. Used 2 jugs with 6 min fuses, we wanted to be miles away when they went off. We watched through high powered spotting scope from a hilltop 2 miles away. Scattered mud and sticks all over the interstate and traffic briefly came to a stop. I can only imagine what would transpire if we were to do that again in today's society.LoSt_AgAiN, WesternPlains, Dave_in_AZ and 7 others Thank this.
