I have one on my Volvo... Its awesome!!! It's has 2 Teflon pads, one on each side of the throat.
Each pad is held in place by 2 big torx style bolts. The pads need changed on occasion, and those bolts usually need heated with a torch before they will break loose.
The pads will stretch and tear if heavy trailers lift much when you are backing under them. So you want to make sure your trailer is high enough to slide under easily before backing under. I'm going to replace my pads when I get back to the yard... They were starting to stretch and bubble up and pretty close to needing replaced anyway, but one tore this week. A yard dog dropped my trailer in a hole and I couldnt get it high enough to slide under easily, and one pad tore when the 5th wheel lifted the heavy trailer.
Our new Frieghtliners have the aluminum 5th wheels with teflon pads. I havent used one myself, but I havent heard any complaints yet. I would imagine they would not hold up very well in heavy haul situations, or when they take alot of abuse, such as off road use or end and/or side dump trailers. But for highway frieght I think they are probably pretty decent. I've heard they save a couple hundred pounds. -
On sale at 4 states this month, $2200. I think I’ll stick with a regular Holland, for $900. I need some 1/4 fenders too. Might get them fancy ones. Like all the Important Truckers have. LolD.Tibbitt, 650cat425, lovesthedrive and 4 others Thank this.
