I read a book long ago about what didnt make it into the movie. What was missed was that the producers were trying to show that all the vegetation was gone. The land was sterile to anything that could grow. Hence the scene where the old man upon his death wanted to see how life was with trees.

Yet we also know that life cant exist with out vegetation. As the vegetation is what creates the oxygen for us to breathe
