Well, I got to say that these new HOS have both helped me and hurt me.
At a Walmart DC after them taking 2.5 hours to unload me with only 2 hours left on my 14 hour clock when I docked, I was able to find parking afterwards thanks to the split sleeper working for both the shorter and the longer break.
A couple days ago I was also able to just chill at the Love's in Jasper, TN for a couple of hours to skip the Nashville rush hour, and not have to worry about my 14 hour clock running out. Drove through Nashville a little after 7:30pm as a result. Very nice to have the option to skip rush hour if you know parking will be available at your final destination.
But today, I got a load where my dispatch is taking advantage of the drivers and not looking at us as human beings, but as machines. To expand:
Yesterday I sent in my ETA to drop at receiver today at 11:30am. I had to drop before 5:00pm, so I was getting there early. Got an "ok thank you" reply on the Qualcomm. So, I woke up at 8:00am this morning to make it there on time. They sent me a preplan at about 10:30am. Picking up a pre loaded trailer set to be ready at 10:00pm tonight and has to deliver by 8:00am tomorrow, it's almost right at 240 miles in my 65 MPH governed truck.
If they would've planned better and sent me this load yesterday, I would have stayed up late last night and tried to sleep in as late as possible. So today, I parked right by the receiver at a truck stop and am taking a 7 hour break from 3:00pm - 10:00pm. I'll then pick up, and be out of the receiver at 10:45 assuming the trailers ready. This will include checking in, getting trailer, pre tripping trailer, checking out with guard. Might be able to do it in 30 minutes if there's no line.
So let's say I leave at 10:45pm. Drive straight through. Get to receiver at 2:45AM. I'm hoping it'll be dead with no line, so let's say I get out of there at 3:15am. Truck stops are 10 minutes down the road, so I'll be parked and start my post trip at 3:30am.
Now, on paper it seems doable. I'm going to try to sleep beforehand but who knows if my body will want to cooperate with me, I usually go to bed around midnight. I think the last hour is going to be tough for me. 2:00am-5:00am seems to be no man's land for me when I'm driving, especially in the pitch black nothingness where I'm at now.
Anyways, hopefully this isn't a regular thing where they expect us to run on splits into the graveyard shift unexpectedly without a days notice so we can adjust our sleep schedules accordingly, or at least try to. That's not very nice of them to do that. Yes I'll be legal to run this but my sleep needs don't really care what an ELD says.......
Well anyways if need be I'll pull over and take little naps. Should be alright. Again, I'm hoping this isn't going to be a regular thing with my company.

One thing I would like to emphasize on the log book regulations, deviations from the 11 in 14 with 10 down rules are to be used at the driver's discretion.
Call the dispatcher or load planner on it if they are not seeking your permission to book you in a way you Have to use split sleeper. The anti coercion laws apply to it.
Then again I'm a a world class PITA and will turn down a load if I just don't want to do it...... Where should I drop this truck and keys?????LoSt_AgAiN, Dale thompson, austinmike and 6 others Thank this. -
Well, I finally got all the brake chambers and air lines done on my Trailer. Adjusted brakes, to 1” travel, got everything zip tied up. Everything came out good. One less thing to worry about.

I got a check engine light for fuel pressure dropping to quickly after turning off it engine. It cleared up after the battery kill switch was used. But I must find it a mil is there.LoSt_AgAiN, lovesthedrive, InTooDeep and 4 others Thank this.
