Possibly a used machine he bought surplus, and he was getting his "inventory" direct from VA or NC. Do not recall the prices
in 55 when I was running bale cotton from MS, LA, AR, and MO in to SC, NC, and the mills in VA. But we all knew what the shop
guys, payroll clerk, and yard man smoked. Around $2.00 a carton probably.
I spent 59 an 60 in an Army unit on Clark AFB in the Philippines. Cigarettes were $.90 a carton, could buy 2 cartons a week on your card.
Wife did not smoke, could get 2 carton also. Sell to local buyers for 16 Ps (Pesos) a carton. Legal rate at base bank was 8 to 1.
$3.60 a week at PX netted 64 Ps. I smoked a pipe back then. Loose tobacco and smokeless was unrestricted.

 

That possibly be a "Wawmpus Cat"? (Wawpus, Whampus, or whatever spelling.
