    This absolutely requires photo documentation.

This is why vacations to Austria are the best. You get a free kitty with your room, and it meows in German.

We also had to spend money due to that tire blowout.

The American truck driver, cat, and truck were ruthlessly and unrelentingly FLEECED by The Kansas Turnpike Authority to the tune of $23.

    The OM was like-

    Thus far...

Looking into original masonry fire box at back of woodstove. Blower fan has been removed from the woodstove for cleaning, it connects to the square hole near bottom of stove.

Looking into top of original fire box and slightly up chimney. Top of stove can be seen in bottom of pic. Short piece of stove pipe that went to no where has already been removed.

Looking directly up masonry chimney... Notice the pins that would have supported the original damper for the open hearth masonry fireplace. It's night time so it kinda looks like looking down a very deep hole.

Looking at top of woodstove insert from inside the upper portion of the original masonry fireplace.

More pics of parts tomorrow when its daylight... They are still in my wifes car.

Side note: Have you ever cleaned a masonry chimney... While kneeling in the fireplace??? Its not a fun experience, especially when most of the fireplace is occupied by a woodstove insert. I got creosote grit in places I didnt know I had!!! And it doesn't taste very good either. I had to wash my hair 3 times when I showered to get all the creosote grit out of my hair... And I'm still not sure I got 100% of it out of my hair.

Down thru here (MS-AL-TN) there is a commentary about fireplace builders. Some can build a fireplace that with a fairly
good pile in it, will heat your britches standing 3 feet in front of it. The house I bought (1991) had one of these.
Then, there is the other.. Whoosh, and flame, smoke and all heat goes out the top. There is something about the way the
flue is configured that makes the difference.
The commentary for the latter is: He oughta have his trowel took away and his xxx whooped.
