At the Battle of Midway......the dude that sunk The Kaga........he hit it with one 500 pound bomb. It went through the flight deck and blew up on the hanger deck.

Then his two 100 pound secondaries ( which were incendiaries ), went down the same hole to Deck 4, like right on top of the torpedo stores.....and it just about blew it in two when they went off.

Here's a Phantom approaching the ship for an arrested landing.

Can see the tail hook hanging down from the rear of the Phantom. Sometimes it's a smooth landing and sometimes the pilot has to slam the plane down to try and catch the arresting cable. As soon as the plane hits the deck the pilot has to hit both afterburners in case he misses the cable or the cable breaks.

That stuff I watch on the big screen at home. The graphics in the flight sims now are crazy.

Japanese fire fighting was weak, for whatever reason. The USA was better at it.

Arresting gear officer is a commissioned officer and he's in a very dangerous spot. Has to watch every plane land on the flight deck. Makes sure the tail hook is down and other issues to watch for.

When you go to airman school.......aircraft fire fighting.........they take you in a hanger to an A-7 hulk. It's plumbed with a sprinkler system. But it's filled with jet fuel not water.

Dude turns it on, throws a flare at it.............WOOOOOOF

It never goes out, and basically between it and the exploding ordinance, you learn you will die.
