Is there ELD apps that meet DOT compliance or should I get a physical device and pay a monthly?

Yes it's an app, well, and gateway box and cable. I dont know of any free ones. They kind of work like a phone where the hardware uses a cellular signal (theres where the subscription fee comes in) and whatever device you "bring" is the interface to it

Not sure about your tax question, I'm not from the us

If you want to avoid any underpayment penalties, yes. It’s a relatively small percentage, but it’ll add up for sure after a year. Also, keeps you from the headache at the end of the year. This applies to any 1099. The weird part is that it’s not against the law to not pay quarterly, but you will get penalized financially, even if you pay extra the next quarter.

Blue ink tech ELD is free if you don't want ifta tracking. Just have to buy the obd plug for the eld to connect to truck. Cost was like $200 if I remember correctly
