My understanding of Practical miles is closest point of starting zip code to ending zip code. I've found it be pretty accurate and even on 1000 mile trips, my odometer matches it within 20 miles.
Now HHG miles really suck. Closest zip codes of the cities in question. That can be off quite a bit since cities like Spokane, or Tacoma can be 10-15 miles long and have multiple zip codes..

A mile is what you drive a practical mile is what you get paid for, the two never seem to be the same.

It's pretty simple, companies pay more per mile on HHG because they know they are little off, or they could pay less per mile on practical miles, either way they already know how much they are willing to pay, they just need a way to put it down on paper.

All jobs are voluntary in the Nation. If the company is not paying you what you feel is fair then do something about it. All drivers should be members of OOIDA in my humble opinion. The company I work for pays off the odometer. We turn the mileage and are paid for it. Of course we are on dedicated routes so it is never much different from run to run but it is. We have to wait in Indianapolis after we drop our trailer for the warehouse crew to load our new one. This takes about 2 hours. So, we go get breakfast. McDonald's is 3 miles away while IHOP is 12 miles. The company pays us for which ever one we go to. $1.35 versus $5.40. We don't abuse them but then they don't abuse us either.
