I've never done port work. Only used it 3 times -- all military bases. Having the TWIC card wasn't even required, it just sped up their on site background check.

Some carriers do a lot of hauling at locations that require TWIC or a promise to get one soon after hire. Some carriers don't do any of that hauling and don't care if you have one or not. All depends on who you're looking to go to work for. No, don't need TWIC for hazmat unless you're picking up or delivering hazmat at a US port of entry.

Did a broker load for my Company, Broker asked if I had a TWIC Card.
He wanted me to PU in Gloucester someplace. Some kind of produce crap.

    Nope, I don't
Well you're gonna need to get $$ Cash (forget how much)
I told him I didn't carry that kind of Cash.

Got mad at me, but got over it.
He found some other place for me to Load at.

If you are going to get a hazmat endorsement and also a TWIC, you may want to get the hazmat first. When you already have the hazmat endorsement you get a discount on the TWIC fee.

When I first got my TWIC card I think that it cost me $135. If you have a hazmat endorsement I believe the cost drops to $105. I just extended my current TWIC card for $60. I seem to recall that they recently reduced the cost of the TWIC, but you can check their website.
