TightWad: I am glad you made your comments. That is the difference between a Technician and a mechanic who does overheads. I have seen a 30 HP difference in pull down HP right after a overhead adjustment on the dyno where the exhaust valves were set within spec but on the tight side. Readjusted to the loose side of spec and get the 30 HP back. This is even more critical on overhead cams where there is no push tube and tolerances are tighter. I have seen 550 Cats run like 350's just because of exhaust valves and Jakes being set on the tight side of spec.
What is an "overhead?"

Would a loose valve be caught during an overhead?
-
Just wondering......while getting an overhead done does it make any difference if the engine is hot or cold....
-
Yes. No one will do an ovhd on the hot engine, it's insane, unless it's the insane shop. Second, engine components need to be the same temperature when doing this adjustment. Not cool, cold. Hot expands, while cool contracts, correct. So, in order to do the proper adjustment, the engine needs to be cold, preferably. If the ohd will be done on the engine that is not cold, you're asking for trouble.brenes-built Thanks this. -
Yes. Heat causes everything to expand. You want the engine cold then set it to spec, otherwise it won't be in spec..
brenes-built Thanks this.
