What is an owner operator?

Honestly being purely indy is getting harder and harder. Not at all imposible as many can do it quite well and make a good living or even go full carrier and expand with that method. But the trucking industry is currently changeing. Some say for the better, others for the worse.

As things currently stand i would venture that being a leased to owner op or a fixed contract O/O are likely the safest options to be a truck owner having the lowest risk but only moderate rewards.

Being an indy is the middle ground with moderate risks but highest potential rewards

meanwhile leaseing from a company is the highest risk lowest reward and most likely to get screwed on.

However all 3 can easily be classified as owner ops. Owner op to me has always been a catch all term with more specialized terms like indy or carrier applied to specific branches.

As a leased on guy, I’m making money, paying my bills, saving money every month, and enjoying my job. I’m not getting rich though, but I love driving trucks, so I never really have a bad day at work. People can call me whatever they want.

If you own and operate the business. That would give you the title of owner/operator...

It is not exclusive to trucking

I own a truck, and I’m leased on as an owner operator to a tanker company, doing OTR loads. I recently had another owner operator tell me I can’t call myself an O/O because I’m leased on to a company. He was very angry, and said I have everything handed to me, so basically I’m not a “real” O/O.
So my question is if this is a real thing with the “real” O/Os, and what should I call myself if so? I don’t lease my truck through the company (like a lease purchase deal), so I don’t feel like I’m a lease operator like at Prime or another mega.
I don’t know of an alternative label for what I do, so let me know if there is one, and how egregious a crime it is for me to call myself an O/O. Thanks y’all!

Sounds like somebody with a short stack and an inferiority complex, most likely a noodle gazer and has a real ugly wife .
