It think it is pretty simple. If you can make a profit then haul it, if not then don't haul it. Everybody's break even point is different. (Just like everybody's definition of "making money" is different)

lets say 10,000 miles a month every month anything less raises your cpm
modest truck payment $1200 .12
insurance just say 8000.00 .06
fuel 6.0 mpg # $3.00 .50
tags and 2290 $2300 .02
tires (10) average # $300 ea .03
oil changes # 15,000 mi
about $250 including grease .02
driver pay you say .40

thats $1.15 per mile
ok now variables
tax's at least 25% of your gross
some pay truck parking
health insurance
how about an accountant?
cell phone
regular phone
home fax?
office supplys?
atm charges ?
other bank fees
internet fees
and lets see oh yea brake jobs $500 an axle
repairs could be a little could be alot !!!!!!!!!
maybe a trailer payment too!
food on the road
i'm sure i forgot something
i dont think $1.64 is that far off
then if you have other drivers
workers comp

Cheap freight is all relative.....
Some may be able to run at $1.20/m to include a profit.....Some may need $1.70/m to make it...
And others run those $.80/m tarped Just-in-time lumberloads.....and are happy......
To me...the last example are cheap and best left for the bottom-feeders and their lying sack of sheyat brokers..... who tell them running $.80/m in their Duct-taped and tie-wired POS are a great rate.....RAG and Dr Demented Thank this. -
