It think it is pretty simple. If you can make a profit then haul it, if not then don't haul it. Everybody's break even point is different. (Just like everybody's definition of "making money" is different)

lets say 10,000 miles a month every month anything less raises your cpm

    modest truck payment $1200 .12

    insurance just say 8000.00 .06

    fuel 6.0 mpg # $3.00 .50

    tags and 2290 $2300 .02

    tires (10) average # $300 ea .03

    oil changes # 15,000 mi
    about $250 including grease .02

    driver pay you say .40

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    thats $1.15 per mile

    ok now variables

tax's at least 25% of your gross

    some pay truck parking

    health insurance

    how about an accountant?

    cell phone

    regular phone

    home fax?

    office supplys?

    atm charges ?

    other bank fees

    internet fees

and lets see oh yea brake jobs $500 an axle

repairs could be a little could be alot !!!!!!!!!

    maybe a trailer payment too!

    food on the road

    i'm sure i forgot something

i dont think $1.64 is that far off

    Cheap freight is all relative.....
Some may be able to run at $1.20/m to include a profit.....Some may need $1.70/m to make it...
And others run those $.80/m tarped Just-in-time lumberloads.....and are happy......

To me...the last example are cheap and best left for the bottom-feeders and their lying sack of sheyat brokers..... who tell them running $.80/m in their Duct-taped and tie-wired POS are a great rate.....
