Hey, guys, don't go jumping to conclusions here. I myself LOVE guns. I've been to many a Cabela's and bought many a rifle, shotgun, and ammo for both. What I don't do is carry my guns around all over the place. This is because I don't feel the need to do that.
I think you guys' perceptions of risk are exaggerated. Quit feeling like every person is your enemy. You sound like some cops I've known who assume everyone is a criminal until proven otherwise. Many a cop believes this, and it's no surprise they feel depressed later in life. I know I don't want to live in a society where everyone thinks that every person who is walking is a potential threat that must be countered by carrying a Winchester 1300 shotgun with an 8-round magazine and 500 shotgun shells at all times. Nope, no paranoids, please.
If you do start carrying guns on trucks because of your exaggerated interpretations of risk, you'll find folks who think like I do, and some will have the power to put you in a cage if they discover your stash. Will you come back here detailing your bone-headed move after you get out?
What is considered a firearm?

It's not like we're paranoid thinking everyone's a criminal, running around with the gun in hand pointing it at everyone who looks at us funny. It's not like I carry my AK-47 or 12 gauge on my back. What's it hurt to legally carry a pistol? Is it such a huge inconvenience worth more than your life the one time you might need it?

What if you DO carry a gun in your cab and a cop finds it? Will you tell him what you just posted here? I doubt that will get you far. I predict you'll be taking a ride in a cruiser somewhere if you do pack a gun. I found all sorts of places I could hide a gun on my truck, but I never carried one. I even thought of putting a 9 mm in a box and wrapping it up like a FedEx shipment, complete with addresses. But I never did that. I never felt like I needed to.
If you pack, just be sure to hide it in a smart place. But I'm telling you--it's not justified. -
I'm not saying to carry it in the truck, although I have no objection to it. I don't know if there are additional laws about having it in the CMV. Everyone here seems to think they know the law, but I don't see anyone backing up the claims with the actual laws. If it wasn't illegal to have one in the CMV and I knew it for sure and I had my CCW, sure I'd carry, and I wouldn't have to hide it if/when I got searched. The Michigan CCW is valid in a LOT of the states. I'd never carry a gun illegally. I won't even transport an empty gun without a case and in the back of my Tahoe, behind the gate.

If you are in a state where you can legally possess it, just tell the man. Simple as that. He will likely want you to give it to him for both records check(to see if it is stolen) and for his own peace of mind. It isn't a big deal. Some may ask for it, others may not. -
The reason you don't see actual laws is there are none. The are absolutely no laws in the US that relate specifically to CMV's and Firearms. You may reference the second amendment to the US Constitution which according to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, gives each and every INDIVIDUAL the RIGHT to keep and bear arms. For the federal government to pass a law specific to CMV's regarding this would be unconstitutional and likely would be struck down in court. Law abiding citizens who get training and handle their firearms responsibly are not likely to use them in the wrong manner. Look at the incident at the mall in Utah, or the many other armed citizen stories out there. If you want to be one of the sheeple(a follower of the crowd, only doing or saying something because others are), go right ahead and buy the line the brady campaign gives you. Gun control doesn't work. Look at the Washington, San Francisco and Chicago gun bans. Crime, including murders, skyrocketed after the bans were enacted because criminals love an unarmed victim, their a pushover. It has also been ruled by the courts that the police do not have a duty to protect any individual, only the collective whole. If you want to be protected, you are on your own. This is not Europe and I pray it never will be, we don't need their way of life.
