I got in trouble at work for trying to leave after working 9 Hrs. We drive day cabs regionally. My boss said I was not allowed to ONLY work a half day, & I MUST work 14 hrs every day. is this true? there is no point a driver can end his day before running out of hours?
What is considered a satisfactory work day?

A good day's work is going fishing AND getting paid for it!
Seriously though, yes They can make you work 14 hours a day or even longer. However you can only drive for 11 hours and then you must have at least 10 HOURS OFF BEFORE YOU CAN DRIVE AGAIN!
you can work as long as they want but once you have worked or driven a TOTAL of 14 hours, you can NOT DRIVE AGAIN until you have at least 10 hours off.
Make sense? -
I am assuming that you are driving more than a 100 mile radius from your starting point, which would preclude you from using that exemption.
Also don't forget the 60/70 hour rule!
You may WORK more than 60/70 hours, but you must not DRIVE again until you have had a sufficient break to regain hours or a 34 hour reset.
Also bear in mind a 34 hour reset is not mandatory. You may choose to reset if you get 34 consecutive hours off duty. You do not have to! (Of course if you like the job and wish to stay employed and make a living, it is in your best interest to take advantage of the reset!) -
And don't forget what is satisfactory to one person, like the employee, may NOT be satisfactory to another, the employer!
But, I really hope that they aren't expecting you to "work" the entire 14 hours per calendar day, unless they are giving you 34 off after every 5th day. -
I wish my boss would make me work a 14hr day, than I wouldn't have to work 18-22hrs anymore
truckerdave1970 Thanks this. -
Are you saying that 14 hour day would be like part time work for you??? I know that feeling!

I've been lucky enough to be able to say I have done that!!!!

Seriously though, They can not make you do anything. All you have to do is "Just Say No" and walk away. There are way more driving jobs than drivers to fill them..
No one makes you do anything it's always your choice... -
Are you asking a question about the regulations or asking about making the boss happy? The boss can require you to sing "Happy Birthday" before making a left turn. There is nothing in the regulations on the matter so it's not a legal question.
Not everything at work is a matter of the regulations or getting a law passed. Please be more specific. -
The joys of working "local" so that one can "be home more".

Funny how it doesn't seem to work that way with "local" driving.
