I'm with Big Don. I run Pittsburgh, and I can't see how those big stretched frame rigs make some of the turns around here. They might work out in the Midwest, as long as you don't have to run in the cities, but in town they have to be a real challenge getting around.

I'm on the same page as you. Any time a driver buys a truck and makes it his, be it custom paint, frame stretching, slamming the suspension, whatever...I think it's cool.

Have you ever seen the car haulers? They're near 80 ft long! That's 6-7 ft longer than the average fleet truck. Slammed low to the ground, long wheelbase, and 80 ft long. Yet they get the job done. Even in the big cities. The bedbuggers run big house sleepers into residential neighborhoods and downtown convention centers. Yeah, I know...it doesn't really count unless you're bumping the docks to the doorslamming crowd, right? Bet they're glad they don't have to rub elbows with doorslammers.

I can load 44000 with 260 gallons of fuel. Luckily here at Mercer, a lot of our loads are lightweight (under 40k) so it's not to big of a deal for me.

Ya know, sixes it is ALL trucking. And it ALL counts. And making blanket statements. . .?

And most of the stops I've seen carhaulers make, are either along the curb, or in the middle of the street, rather than having to navigate really tight places. And you know what? THAT counts as trucking too. . .

    I totally agree.

This question I asked kind of leads up to why have a stretched frame if you are not utilizing it for accommodations such as this or because you are a heavy hauler.

Everyone PooPoos the big after market sleepers and I can see the point if you are losing freight because of the extra weight they put in them .It is ridiculous they outfit them with oak cabinet doors and veneer covered 3/4 inch particle cabinet boxes that belong in a house.

I used to work for a small company building large, light and fast Custom Sportfishing boats out of wood and Epoxy fiberglass. The interiors looked like solid teak but it all was a veneer over a lightweight plastic honeycomb or balsa wood core.
The cabinets we built were lighter than the cardboard boxes the cheap cabinets they put in these after market sleepers came in.

There is no reason you couldn't build a very livable 108 inch sleeper with a nice small galley with a full size fridge and toilet with combined shower and keep it at 2000 lbs.

Hell the cabinets they put in these aftermarkets gotta be 600lbs and than they have a corian top to add another few hundred.

It really is not very much more money to build it light and practical and if you limited it to 108 you would still have some maneuverability.

    Thats cool.

From what I have read following you and a few other guys it sounds like Mercer is spot on.

I read in Mercers qualifications they want you to be able to scale 45000 , do they hold you to that or will they take a dry scale of your truck?

Any chance you can give me a breakdown of what your truck weighs and the trailer weight also?

How much does that tarping system of yours weigh and what does something like that run for cost if you don't mind me asking.

I really like what this company does with a OEM Kenworth 86 inch Studio sleeper They manage to fit a combo toilet shower and a small galley. Also they get a table in there and a double bed with access to the bathroom through a sliding door.

I can take my 240" SFA Mack anywhere a company driver can run their 198" SBA freightshakers, petercars, or cornbinders. Usually, i'm the one getting in & out of a job site without tearing anything up or getting stuck, and successfully delivered several loads at jobs that SHOULD have been bid for tandems instead of T/T's. It all comes down to the driver, really. A good driver can put a long wheelbase truck & trailer into a tight spot and make it look easy...
