What is heat and cold therapy?

    Hey friends can someone tell me what is heat and cold therapy. My father is suffering from a severe back pain and is really very depressed due to that. Someone told me to give him the heat and cold therapy which will help him in getting recovered soon from this problem of back pain. I really don’t know what is it and how does it work so please give me your suggestions on it.

    From my own experience (no doctor here) hot and cold therapy is this....20 minutes of heat like a heating pad placed on the affected area,then 20 minutes of an icepack and then 20 minutes of nothing. The heat stimulates the blood flow, the ice reduces swelling.

    I'd second luv's reply -- I'm not a doc, either... but on Monday I was diagnosed with three bulged disks/pinched nerves in my lower back. The pain isn't there, but in the groin and thighs and I have very limited flexibility in my hip area. My chiropractor is currently working with me on pain management... then I have to get serious about losing a substantial amount of weight.

    Right now, she has me applying ice for 15 minutes, followed by heat for 15 minutes, and then stretching exercises -- once a day minimum, twice is ideal. Oh... and naproxen -- maximum OTC dose.

    She's giving me two weeks to get enough relief that I can once again resume my lunchtime walks... and if it doesn't come around, I'll be headed to an osteopath.
