What is intermodal trucking? Are these jobs as easy to get as OTR jobs? How is the pay and home time?

Intermodal is the transport of containers from ships or trains. Its not the ost glorious job, but many guys are home most nights unless they choose to do otr. The jobs are easy to get because the intermodal part of trucking is growing rapidly. You will need a TWIC card (transportation worker identification card). It requires a backround check and fingerprinting and costs $135 I think. It is used for entry into the ports. Being in NYC you are in a great area with all the major ports around you. Since you dont have much experience, try calling Schnieder or Swift. Both pull out of those ports and hire guys with little experience. I dont know about pay rates. But just know the equipment isnt the greatest, the traier chassis can be real bad an ride like a brick on square wheels.
zoekatya Thanks this. -
Pound puppy is probably correct for some locations.
But I run Intermodal support for KLLM in Chicago. I do not need a TWIC card.
Re-reading his post, he is probably more correct for your location.
I pull trailers to and from rail yards in my area and I am home nightly. I get paid a salary for any day I work. Not miles or hourly...

Thank you for your prompt, thorough, and informative response Pound Puppy. I really appreciate it. -
Do you know how to go about getting a TWIC card? Is there a website by chance?

Thanks PM Racing. Sounds like something I'd definitely be into.
