you can't FULLY charge a vehicles battery just by running the engine.. it's a pretty complicated process that goes in stages that only a battery charger can actually do.. to fully charge a vehicle's batter all "x" amount of amps have to be replaced in the cell that were loss during the discharge. there is no device on the vehicle that can measure that (at least i've never seen one) only thing that there is on a vehicle is a volt meter which gives a person a general ideal but doesn't really tell the full story..

my pick up and my wifes car both have gel batts in them, and randomly one morning her car wouldn't start, (turned out over the long weekend her cell charger killed the batt. I ended up buying a battery charger and recharged her batter and it's like new, i even put it on my pick up just because, and it show'd that the batt was at 85% instead of 100%

I believe it will depend on the age and condition of your batteries, also how well maintained they are. ie; Dirty terminals, bad cables etc.

I believe that the battery charging system is designed to give your batteries their longest possible life, but limiting the amount of charging they receive. (I can't remember where I read that, but it was on some battery sight, possible Interstate?)

I'm curious as to how those gel cell batteries are going to work out for automotive use. I know they are great in amateur radio and other communication applications.

the battery died only over a cell phone charger? Cell phone only uses like 1-2 amps, some .5 in cars.

Add to that, whatever amps are drawn by the things that never shut off in your vehicle. Then throw in a less than optimal condition battery and maybe a cold weekend? Yeah, it sure could do it.

    yeah I guess so

in my car my 12v plugs wont even work unless the car is on, I have thought about hard wiring it but then my wife would probably do the same lol. She killed the batt one time leaving the dome light on, luckily I own a booster pack and always keep it in the trunk.

Oh yeah, battery chargers are our best friends sometimes. I've got all my radio gear wired direct, and I really get pissed at myself when I forget to shut something off. . .

I recommend anyone to own a battery booster, has saved me a couple different times and I was able to help a couple stranded people in the past as well, mine is an 800 amp

I used to have a 1200 amp but the battery died after a couple years

had a 2013 prostar it was brand new and it would only take 3 hours for the load sheading shut down to kick in. i could not have a cooler in that truck. talk them into put me in a 2014 freightliner and i have never had the load sheading shut down once even with a tv, cooler lunch box cooker, fan , small inverter going at the same time.
when a had the pro star had it at dealer shop batters checked good.

only way to fix it was to get out of that truck after 6 mo. of ######## about it thay finaly got me out of that prostar and it wood be nice to never see the inside of one ever again!

I just left a prostar for a 2014 freightliner 2 nights ago, so far seems to be better for me also. In the prostar sometimes my inverter would beep for loss of power with only my laptop plugged into it, in the freightliner I have 2 things plugged into it and it never beeps plus a fan and lights going.
