Maybe he made enough on the days before and what he shared with you was his last leg bringing him home. If so, I would have done the same. Last Friday, I deadhead 130 miles back home from Sheboygan, WI - generating loss by deadheading, because there was nothing there to find but if I had found $450, I would have taken it even if it meant $250 after fuel and tolls.
The point is, there is nothing scientific about this business or the way accounting is done about it.
Every story has its context, howeverJoeyJunk, Siinman, larry2903 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Makes it extremely difficult to nearly impossible to compete with them unless you're willing to bite your nose to spite your face.Another Canadian driver and kay_ray Thank this.

I agree with @Dave_in_AZ and @TallJoe
There’s so many variables to this
someones at home expenses eating out for every meal Vs a guy who lives on rice and beans is also very different
Point I’m making is a new guy cannot look at this as how many who have posted many times like if he only has to make X dollars per mile he will make it
Some never figure in a truck payment which I believe you should even if paid for because at some point you will need that $. Some run until the wheels literally fall of and then are out due to no funds
Major repairs will hit hard but should be good for several years
As Dave’s numbers look he could figure $10,000 per year as a norm and be fine but if he takes it out of the operating equation and use that $ to buy a boat then he might be surprised when the next repair comes in and if it doesn’t then bonus but he’s showing 3 pretty consistent yearsCzar_Zero, Another Canadian driver, larry2903 and 1 other person Thank this. -
If you think 2.5$/mile is a good rate from a lane thats paying close to 4$/ mile . You are running yourself and other o/o into the ground. Fyi i picked the same load that he was picking for 4.3$/ mile. Theres no excuse for slashing the rate by almost 2$/ mileDadetrucking305, Another Canadian driver, Vampire and 6 others Thank this.

My average cost over the last 5 years for the truck(s) I've run, not my other trucks, is about $100 a day, 365 days a year.
That's for the whole world including money for a replacement.
That was before Joe Bananas took over. Now I figure it at $150. Not kidding.
So anyways.....this was my week last week. Figure about $2800 fuel and DEF, and my $150 day for 7 days for truck and the blue sky.
According to the TTR truck analysis, data review, super number cruncher.......did I make any money? Would the amount vary if the mother ####ing wind wasn't blowing like a ####ing hurricane half the time?
Was The OM pleased?Czar_Zero, Another Canadian driver, Vampire and 5 others Thank this. -
Cost per mile it’s not a fix number and the same for everyone.
It depends on too many things like mpg, equipment payment and interest rates, insurance payment, how many miles you run, driver/owner pay, do you do any of the maintenance yourself or run to the dealer every time the check engine light comes on and I’m sure that there is more to be added.
So cheep freight for some can be good money for others.Another Canadian driver, Rideandrepair and GYPSY65 Thank this. -
I was saying about something completely else.
There could be different facets of booking the same load.
Fyi
This is a competitive business. Bringing others to the ground, if I am the last one standing, is a win for me. Intentionally or not. Capitalism 101
In other words, you take care of your business, I'll take care of mine. The dude with the language barrier, takes care of his too
So don't worry about him. Worry about why it is possible that Chicago foreigner with a broken English, almost an illiterate, can jeopardize your business model.
You should be reasourcefull enough to be above that eventuality, don't you think?Czar_Zero, BoostedTeg, Vampire and 8 others Thank this.
