I can't slight Bahkum: I dont' think he said anything wrong outright.
I came to the forum to catch up on the industry and check up on outfits I was putting applications in with, after being off the road for many years. I've learned:
1.) Things are tight and the apps are many; often very qualified drivers.
2.) Prehires are a "hope" list.
3.) CDL mills are getting away with criminal activity.
4.) Fired drivers will exxagerate.
5.) Companies still fudge HOS, but nothing like before.
6.) Despite the CB despots, there are a LOT of good people in trucks. With radios off.
7.) Value of the dollar vs pay per mile is worse than it was in '88.
8.) The new trucks look more like cars inside than trucks.
9.) Qualcomm is both a good and bad thing.
10.) Dispatchers used to fire you. Now you can fire them.
All in all, newbies can make it if they have the right attitude and can handle the life. Divorce is still common amongst drivers and many quit to save family. Nothing new happening here. Except for:
The economy tanking and staying there.
Thousands of drivers wanting to truck because of it alone.
Good drivers being forced out of work with bad choices.
Driver benefits going down the tubes and rates dropping.
ABS braking and auto adjusters.
At least you can STOP well.rookietrucker, Baack and wwfd1220 Thank this. -
1) Never wear stripes with plaids.
2) Black socks with sandals still not "in".
3) For a driving job; coat and tie a bit over the top.
4) Always wear fresh, clean underware, just in case you meet a nice, cute ER nurse.
5) A turtleneck knit shirt might be a bit uncomfortable for Vegas in August.Red Fox Thanks this. -
I know I mentioned this before, but here it goes again.. Worked with a guy at Swift who wore a 3 piece suit. The first time we meet, I had asked him if he was looking for someone. He said no I'm a driver LOL.. O and dress shoes.. -
Well I didn't think bahkum was doing anything wrong, but I do now. At first I thought he just hadn't read enough threads. Then I thought he simply didn't hear what he wanted to hear. Such as: he wanted to hear that there are jobs galore and the companies are paying $2 per mile to newbie drivers and $4 per mile to anyone with over 6 months experience.
But now that I've read his posts correcting people's grammar and spelling when all they did was make 1 or 2 posts I think he's just a troll trying to cause trouble and that in all likely hood he's a retread with a new name and new isp.
Just my own little opinion.
*And yes, I've been known to dedicate entire posts to correcting another's posts line by line. But they were being jerks.*
