"No, but I'd love to know where you get your numbers from." doesn't mean I'm trying to deny something. I'm asking for a source of info. Not 'trying to deny'.

The school took us to the Smithton truck stop, here in SW PA. I did talk to truckers for an hour~ish. I got most saying that it's pretty saturated, but that they like seeing newbies because a lot of the more experienced guys have bad habits. I told them school was 6 months and they all said something along the lines of "Good. Hopefully they'll really slam home the PROPER way to get things done on the road." Now...maybe I just talked to 3 'nice guys' or 'airheads' or 'idiots' or they were patronizing me and I didn't pick up on it. So, maybe I'll go down of my own accord some day and see if I can nail down some guys that want to slit my throat because I'm considering their career choice. Maybe they can laugh at me because I'm too old to join up.

So you're saying that 16-18 months down the road 98% of newbies hit the bricks? So that I'm going to fail, and to not bother trying? I should tuck my tail between my legs, forget my aspiring career, eat my school loan and go back to my last job? Funny. Isn't that EXACTLY what my first post asks? (Except that my last job wasn't PT minimum wage at Wal*Mart/McD.) Problem is I just can't understand living by numbers. (Which is probably why I'm a motorcyclist, too. Don'tcha know we're all stupidly suicidal on those death traps!) Here's news for you, Jack. Those numbers aren't going to do anything but strengthen my resolve. I'll give you my home phone number. You can call me up every day and leave a voice mail saying "You're going to fail. 98% of you do within 18 months!" and I'll take that with the same attention I give to throwing away some advertisements that come in the mail. If that makes me a moron...then I'm a #### moron.

I'm 29 and I get all of this from you; I can only imagine how you'd feel looking at my 40-50 year old classmates. (There's about 8-9 in a class of 16 of them.)

Rick, don't even start. That 'Rick' in my original post? It's you. You and 3-5 others are the very reason this thread exists. You have more negativity in your little finger than an any 200 members on this forum after a bad day's work. I'm tempted to print out your posts and mail them to a psychoanalyst for evaluation. 16 years on the net, numerous forums larger than this and I've NEVER seen someone #### on as many newbies as you have. And don't bother with that 'realist' crap. I'm not knocking your experience or trucking wisdom. I'm not saying you never helped anyone. I'm not questioning you in any way. I'm knocking your delivery, which is bitter, cold and uncaring. Seeing you post a "Welcome to the forums! The biz is a bit stretched at the time being, but feel free to look around. It's not all doom and gloom!" would have me reeling from a brain aneurysm IMMEDIATELY.

Somebody needs to review the forum rules . I already reported 2 posts with violations . Somebody could end up banned if they don't straighten their act out .

I suppose if you do get on with a company you won't be sharing your experience..

One thing about forums in general....
If you ask for thoughts and opinions, you will dang sure get them.
You may not like the answers, so be prepared, but you did ask.
I have seen this alot, a poster asking questions only to debate the answers given.
In this instance I for one would lend more weight to an experienced trucker than a school or company recruiter, but that's just me.

By the way, isn't PA the low freight capital of the US? Seems like I read that somewhere:biggrin_25525:..... anyway.

Hey, I for one appreciate the info on here, and if I want to participate, I do so in a respectful and harmonious manner. There are many opposing opinions and viewpoints, but when it comes to getting the answers... I think someone said something about "gaining more with honey than with vinegar".

There ya go, I have used all the big words I know, so I will sign off!

Hey Rick! Someone just called me "Sweety" on another thread trying to be insulting and condescending. It made me think about the post where I called you "Hun". I do hope you know I use that in affection not in insult. But if you thought I was being sarcastic.......please accept my sincere apology.

I'm not all that computer savy, so please put up with my going back and forth on occasion. Teen son hasn't showed me how to break apart quotes, to answer certain lines (like you did with mine, hey come out here to California and show me how to do it).

Anyway, SW PA, is not a real hot spot for freight, just look at your unemployment numbers, but it is central for companies that run through your area, helps in getting home time, at least passing thru type.

Unless you have some friends or relatives already in trucking, you will be looking at the larger "training" companies to get started with. As you have seen and heard, those are just getting started gearing up (slowly) for the increase in freight. One suggestion I might offer, the one area that continues even in recession, is groceries. With this in mind, you might limit your company research to the "refer" companies. Using these, you can find threads here on this forum about most all. Keep in mind these will include both good and bad reports, quite often any driver who has been terminated, will logically, have a sore spot on his dierriere, and pass this onto yours hoping you will accept his analysis as gospel. But turn the page and you will find another driver who has no problems with the company.

You stated you are a pessimist, better try to get on the other fence, optimism will be a better way to approach the new career. These "training" companies can, and will be brutal to the rookie driver, just to test his/her mustard, and to find out how far you are willing to go to keep your job. (running illegal is some way)

So keep your chin up, and thicken the skin (hide for you cowboy types) and get ready for some taxing times. I hope your instructor or recruiter has been telling you guys the truth on the wages, the honest wages, because they seem to push 40k+ as a first year driver. Very few will bust through 35-37k, just because the starting mileage pay is pathetic, and they will put on the ugly loads, because you will run them, as you are in fear of your job.

Posititve threads, in the Truckers and the Trucking Industry section of threads, topics, whatever, you can find newbee posts and questions. ( I just looked and there you are in that section....very good)

Now for sh..its and giggles....don't get mad...but in your response to my post you made:

    1) spelling error....1
    2) grammatical error....1
    3) improper tense usage....2
    4) punctuation error....2

Your test for today...open book OK...find these errors, and write on the board....ME BAD, 200 times

Be safe, shiny side up, wheels on the ground.

My pessimism is there, but it doesn't rule me. No doubt I have spelling, grammar, punctuation mistakes galore. We each react our own way to anger or disgust. Mine happens to be loss of concentration until the matter is rectified. This thread has no shortage of me shaking me head, so...yea....... :disgust: Shame it can't be deleted. (Rather, shame it was brought back from being deleted.)

Breaking quotes up is all copy and paste. Hit the 'quote' button of the post you want to quote. Break off the parts you want to specifically reply to separately. Put (quote) before the first letter. Put (/quote) after the last letter/punctuation. Do this for all of what you want to quote. Just use brackets [ and ] instead of parenthesis. It's easier when shown.
