I am an owner operator leased on to a carrier and I have to say that it ultimately comes down to pay. I left this outfit twice and twice I came back because all the nice amenities like showers and tvs at terminals are worthless if you can’t make a decent check to keep up with the expenses of maintaining a truck and still make a decent living.
This carrier is old school: no nice terminals, not even a shower at some of them, no tvs, no food and all the like, but their rates are much better than the competition who will often bid insanely low rates in order to get the work. No room left for an owner/op to be profitable when that happens. At this carrier your pay is always right, and if something is off they will correct it within a day and have you a comcheck, the office staff is polite and treat you with decency (even sent my wife flowers to the hospital when our first daughter was born), you are left alone as long as you make your appointments, no forced dispatch which means you get to pick your load and take time off as needed but are still expected to work.
Also there is always work. Even during the Pandemic there has been enough work to stay afloat and it’s actually booming right now (we haul chemicals). That’s all you really need.
