A local dump truck gets paid hourly usually, about $80 hr. to the truck, but this starts at the job site and ends at the job site, so travel time from home to jobsite is on you. You may have to do jobs "out of town" too so motel food is on you. It can be a good thing if you can work year round, but is seasonal a lot even in Ca.

The main answer to this question is which do you prefer, home time or bigger paychecks. There's no doubt as an oo you would make more OTR. As long as you run your co right that is. However ,, you have a lot more expenses out OTR then say local dump truck. As the other posters put, there are so many different variables that it would be almost impossible to answer it. But I personally think the first question you need to answer is the one that I listed. Good luck !

Being based out of Alberta, I'd say gravel would pay better than long haul. Especially when the patch picks up again.

It's depends on what you are hauling. From my experince livestock and car hauling are king but with it comes challenges. Am in car hauling and won't leave anytime soon. I make as an o/o in one week what I used to make in one month doing dry van but it's alot of work and I only have a 7 car trailer

It's going to depend on you. I know owners that are home every day and their profit is around 60-70k/year. But they're actually partners, so if one truck breaks down, the other can rescue the load, the have a spare truck between them. Basically, they're a trucking company. If you want to really make money, that's what it's going to take, being able to outbid the big companies on loads, while being able to GUARANTEE their load is delivered on time.

If you want to just buy a truck and sign up with a carrier, it seems like most of them just make the same pay as a company driver, but have all the headache the carrier doesn't want.

Dump truck can make great money, but it's your life. You start in the morning, and get home just in time to go to bed, and you'll do that up to 6 days a week usually. And there's a good amount of downtime on big jobs, waiting in line to be able to dump.
