Not at all. You can definitely swap in 46s. You will need to take the truck to a spring and suspension shop that can re certify your truck. They give you paper work that you carry in the truck for the DOT saying it now has heavier rears. Not that is right but a friend of mine had a truck re certified to 44k rears and never changed anything. Just took the tag off the rear axle houseing. At that point its up to the DOT to prove they aren't 44s. Though they could do it I doubt they ever would. Thats a hassel that I dont think they would put the effort into unless they were really after you for something. Susprisingly here in NY we no longer need the recirtification. When we go get our permits we tell them what our axles are raited at and thats whats on our permits. Its up to the DOT to catch us if we are lieing. Imagine that! I think it saved the state of NY alot of paper work letting us self certify or some crap like that.

Well that makes me happier. This is my first truck so I'm trying to feel things out still. My family owns a seasonal business that I cant just up and leave to drive for someone else so I'm going to do as much side work as I can with out it affecting my job here. I really appreciate all your info on here.

Heres The truck all I have done so far is eraser wheel the person I got it from lettering off it.

The axel wieghts on your tractor will be fine. I ran dump trailer hauling sand from Ct to RI for 3 years with 12f and 40's with a tandem 34ft dump trailer grossing close to 100,000 every load and never had an issue with the axels. RI i was permited for 102,000. I would go with a tri axel trailer before i swapped the rears in the truck. Nice to have the extra set of brakes.

    BryRylanKW Thanks this.

Ya an extra axles worth of breaks will more than double the life of your other breaks. If your third axle is liftable the tires will last several years on that axle. It will also ride better.

    Just another thought...
Had a local guy add a lift axle to his ten wheeler. He is very capable of doing the install. Here in Mass the truck has to be certified. He had a hard time getting someone to certify his truck for "liability" reasons, because they didnt do the install(and didnt make money doing the install).

Trucks really short i dont think I can fit a axle in there with out moving my batterys and I would have no room for the wet system tank. And my radiator started leaking today FML....

You want the lift axle on the trailer. Find out if it needs to be steerable or not before you spend you money. If you dont need a steerable dont get one. A non steerable is a lot less maintance.

I dont think it needs to be theres a ton of tankers and live floors lowbeds and stuff that are not steer able. I did get to pull a dump trailer today because my friends Mack is all torn apart for paint right now.
