I hate being tailgated also. But I can't drive the other guys truck and mine. You do what you can to take care of what you're doing. Operate your truck the best you can. People are going to do what they do regardless of what you say. Also you could pay someone $1000 a day to sit at home and they would complain their butt hurts...just can't please some people no matter what you do!!!

When I'm on my motorcycle, I keep some rocks in my pocket to drop...plausible deniability, but it gets 'em off my tail. Steel ball bearings work, too, but those are kind of obvious that they weren't just "kicked up by my tires" . Everything else I own has sufficient ground clearance (including my Mack) that I just start looking for debris to straddle...gators, dead critters, etc. I can lay on a creeper with a grease gun on my chest and roll under from nose to tail...'cept for the front axle, but it'll still clear a tire laying in the road. When it comes out from under me, it isn't MY problem. Had you maintained a safe distance, you wouldn't have hit it. All of those fairings and air dams they are putting on those new trucks, or even the fancy low slung chrome bumpers on the old school hoods...they don't fair too well when "road debris" hits them. And if it's a car? Depending upon WHAT it was I just straddled, it's next stop might just be the scrap yard. Too bad, so sad, not my problem...and unlike a brake check (or some other overtly aggressive move), there ain't a dern thing you can do to me about it. It was just road debris. I could clear it, so it was safer for me to just straddle it rather than leaving my lane to go around. If YOU had maintained proper following distance (or not been driving such a crappy low slung vehicle), you might have been able to avoid it. Not my problem.

First things first, try 25 to 28 in a 30 zone instead of 35. There's nothing you can do, if it gets real bad grab an exit, I for one don't want to be hit from any the six sides, so I'll try different tactics, ive changed a lane and slowed down some get it some don't.

my favorite the driver who just has to pass because I've got the space in front then slows down where it appears I'm tail gating while another tail gates me while another passes all of us then slows down in front of the driver ahead of me and makes it appear we're all tail gating the lead. then it's repeated over and over. it's time grab an exit

5 over the speed limit is as fast as you can go and not attract law enforcement attention. My boss would love it if I ran excessive speeds

In a CMV, 5 over is more than enough reason to pull you over.

The ones saying throw whatever out your vehicle, better hope they don't have a dash cam. If someone did that to me for whatever reason and caused any damage; I would definitely be coming after you with legal action with my dash video. And it records in HD.

So bulldog, you are such a nice guy.

AND how about the guy sitting in his Prius driving safely way behind you, not causing you problems but gets his with the crap you purposely ran over with your truck?

He has to replace his windshield and get his car repainted because of the crap that is thrown up.

It is best not to do a thing.

Where is this documented as fact? I have personally passed cops in median going at least 10 over, got cpl tickets, often times nothing, know others ticketed for just few over.

I have seen several posts that CORRECTLY advised to slow down and let them pass. I would also based on my experience add that you should also increase your following distance a bit as well and here is why? Short of clear evidence to the contrary most of the time if you are hit in the rear and this causes you to tag the vehicle in front of you YOU can be charged with following too close and be charged with that part of the accident. I know of this happening in Atlanta 2 times, Dallas and Charlotte once each. Without a witness there is NO way to prove you did not hit the vehicle in front of you and then this caused you to be hit. A camera in the tractor might help you if it is on and recorded the sounds and vibrations and the timing of them. (another reason to have one)

One of those Atlanta accidents involved a driver that drove for JB Hunt and a good friend of mine. He also was charged by the Cobb county police for following to close and even went to court but was found guilty and ordered to pay the fine. JB Hunt also paid for the damage to the trailer hit and agreed to go 50 50 on the liability on the rear part and each paid to fix their equipment.

NEVER tailgate and when you see you are being tailgated slow down and increase YOUR following distance.

    drivingfool Thanks this.
