Hand, you don't really have a choice. By now hopefully you have moved to a more suitable place. In this situation it is only a violation if you get stopped and your hours are checked. The thing is parking on the side of a road or highway ramp is dangerous and if another vehicle were to hit your truck , well a HOS violation is nothing compared to what would happen then. Always remember this truism, once you find yourself in a hole stop digging the hole deeper.

Thank you. I thought it was the 14, and I guess if I ever go back OTR I should remember that. :) I had in my head it's the OTR version of the 16 hour once a week rule for locals.

Live and learn. If it's just a company HOS violation it's no big deal. You might get a warning letter and you might get chewed on a little.
If you're out of hours because of poor trip planning take the minor punishment and learn from your mistakes. It's not the end of the world, okay?
Your boss might even do a little bit of "electronic editing" so that the HOS violation disappears. It's been known to happen. ;)

You guys really are very nice. I can't really buy 45 miles away from his company DC and the boss tells him to find a motel room? Really? Are you in a daycab? How about getting another driver there to drive the truck on in.....maybe "the boss" has a CDL.

    I've been told that...
Well the exact conversation was more like ..
Me: I'm a 3 hour drive away, and I have 2:45 left on my 14. Can I do the local exemption?
Him: Nope (I didn't qualify for a legit reason). Just get as close as you can and get a hotel room.
Me: Ok, thank you. (I drove to the yard anyway, went On-duty with 1 minute left about 1/2 mile from the yard. :)

I've done that quite often. Our Qualcomm is set up to give 3 minutes before it will change status again while driving, unless you get to 25mph.

Move and don't take the warning letter from your company as an axe just above your neck. Your company has to be able to show DOT, if they ask, what they did to make you understand you have violated the HOS and company policy. Your company has to "shake their finger" at you and you should pretend, I mean understand, you shouldn't violate HOS.

Not everyone can be prefect all the time. ;-)

I've logged out of the truck all together ( day cab ) and driven it back to the DC. Once was about half hour. No one said anything. Told the DM it was going to happen at one of my stops a good six hours earlier, he told no one and went home. Never heard a word about it.

You probably moved it by now but from now on you need to keep track of your hours. There's no excuse to run out on a ramp thats just poor planning on your part.
