My friend, it's called camouflage. Like my cousin Vinnie said "try to blend". Just get a foam cheese head hat. You'll be fine.

Well I guess you can call it goody two shoes but the bottom line is if you don't check youre going to get tickets and youre going to break down.

I understand pulling dropped trailers is crap but when you hook to one, how do you know all the auto slacks aren't out of adjustment? What if you need to stop quick? Sometimes an extra foot is all you would have needed to stop.

And for what? To save 10 minutes with a 7/16" wrench. C'mon. Chassis and vans are easy. Try steps and double drops. If you don't want to check stroke at least get an infra red thermometer and make sure the drums are all close to the same temp when you stop for a coffee.

As, for u joints.... Anyone that drives a dedicated truck should be able to see/feel that coming long before it fails. You don't need to check them every day.

Here is what a Good PTI can miss. May 97 heading to Denver load of materials for the Mint on the trailer. I hit the 80-35 Spilt on the West end of Des Monies and hammer it. All of a sudden the entire Back end locks up and starts spitting parts out between the Tandems and under the trailer. Coast into the rest area and go HOLY CRAP but not in those words. I call the boss at home I think I caused Coitus Interrupts as he was madder than a tornado and I heard the wife on the phone going HURRY THE HELL UP ON THE PHONE. I had the Rear Ring Gear sitting outside the Housing the Pinion Shaft was in the Housing the Drive Shafts from the Carrier Bearing to the Power Divider was GONE the intermediate was GONE. the Yoke for the Thru shaft was GONE then they got to the shop and started to pull her apart. 4 Busted axles 2 complete rear end Gear assemblies and one rear end housing where required to put it back together. What caused that Carnage the Inner Bearing for a rebuilt rear End assembly Pinion Shaft was set 2 10 thousandths of an inch to tight and had burned the Bearing out in less than 10K miles. The Rebuild shop where the boss got that one had to pay for close to 18 Grand in repairs and lost revenue.

Sure it is, IF you do a proper pre-trip! A pre-trip is more involved than just thumping the tires and checking lights. She found it during a road-side inspection easy enough. You could have found it during your pre-trip...IF you had done one.

That doesn't matter one bit. A proper pre-trip ought to be done on EVERY piece of equipment you operate.

Did you crawl under the trailer to inspect the brake linings to ensure they were not cracked or worn too thin? Did you verify that the brakes were properly adjusted? When you were doing that, you would have noticed the mis-matched slack adjusters. Just because you DIDN'T do your job doesn't mean the job COULDN'T be done. Again, if she could find the problem during the road-side inspection, you COULD have found it during your pre-trip...IF you had bothered to do it.

    Simple: DO A PROPER PRE-TRIP!!!!!

Don't blame her for the problem with the chassis YOU were pulling. Sure, the shop screwed up when they installed the slacks...but YOU screwed up by not catching the mistake before you were on the road with that trailer.

Next time, pre-trip the #### truck & trailer properly and you might avoid finding yourself in these situations.

I had a 2.64 direct with10 speed Meritor and lost the power divider.

We pulled heavy, and lots of off pavement with them, a good setup for fuel mileage but not good for longevity.

They had 2 wrecks and pulled the power dividers from them, and they both didn't last, the last time the dealer in Dubuque fixed it and it lasted, the only one of 5 left running with around a million miles on the clock. Clutch went out and I swapped with a guy deadheading back so the truck wasn't towed. That one just slipped, so it was still barely driveable.

U-joint is often found when dropping the driveshaft to tow, and they can break anytime, although the more miles, the more likely a failure will occur.

I had one go right next to a repair shop in the adjacent truck stop and had to call a wrecker to move it, it was the front one that went. That was the next truck with a higher ratio and pre EGR ItSuX. It went to salvage after a wiring issue finally surfaced

After taking care of the load all night,by keeping trucks from parking on the windward side, I got to run it up to Cold Spring, MN to the Gold'nplump plant at that location, I have been at eight chicken plants in the upper midwest at this point, and I really hate hauling live ones. The hours are just bad all the time.

Technically, he's "On Duty Not Driving" while broke down and waiting, so if the officer wants to inspect they can. The fact that he was stopped on the shoulder of a public road means he had been driving on that public road. The officer does not need "probable cause" to perform a random compliance check. They are allowed to pull you over for no other reason than to perform an inspection...why would this be any different? He's on a public road. He's on duty. The inspection isn't going to be tossed out just because he was broke down when the cops rolled up.
