Good question with no good answer. He got into a bad situation and instead of calmly dealing with it he rushed to get out of it. He's in a special category of stupid but many do similar, though less dramatic things.
You will screw up, we all do. Most of us get out of it unscathed but many careers are ended before they've really gotten started because they take a small mistake and turn it into a bigger one.
