I Agree with Bronc, I'm a cat fan but not the C15, stay with a 3406 or even a C12, C13 if hauling light most of the time.

What size would be good for hauling commodities,with a 3 axle trailer==no cheater. I'm thinking 475=550 cummins with a 13 speed r/r

The 3406 is getting harder to find and if you do get one it is going to be in a older truck.. In todays market your gping to be limiting yourself soon to going to CA for instance real soon they are already blocking older trucks from entering their ports out there.. What do you plan on doing with this truck? In todays race MPG is a real ace in the hole.. Cat's do not seem to give reliable high #'s in this area.. IF your not needing high MPG but need high HP for say oversize loads that just won't get good MPG with any motor due to their size, weight and NON aeordynamics... then I would say yup, a CAT is great! They pull all day long and get the same MPG loaded to the max or empty..
If your going regular dry van or reefer.. I'd stay to Cummins, or Detroit.. They both give decent service. I have a ISX Cummins and it's made a beliver out of me.. (I used to be a CAT man myself..)
Happy hunting!IUFAN87 Thanks this. -
Gonna be pulling a dry van all over the place. All the way from under 20k lbs to 45k lb loads in the mountains. I've pretty much decided to go with Detroit. Most of the ones in my price range are 12.7's. I wouldnt be afraid to go with an ISX Cummins if the right deal presented itself. I'm running an ISX in my 9400i company truck and it does ok. Not alot of power, but they have it turned back to 385hp as I'm told. Just got the green light from the company to switch to O/O, so I'm goin truck shoppin early next week. Hopin to find somethin halfway decent in the 10k to 16k dollar range. Has to be 01 or newer. Several I'm lookin at are 03's in the mid 750,000 mile range.

This is TOTALLY from left field but I ended up with an 04 Volvo 670 with the 12 liter Volvo motor. I went out with the intentions of getting a Freightliner with Detroit power but every one I looked at in my price range was absolute JUNK! The dashes were falling apart, A/C didn't work, doors didn't shut or open right, engines had excessive blow-by etc. Most of them were in the 12 to 14k range in price with 700k plus miles. I found some in the 18 to 19k range but they all had either cats or MB's in them and they were junk too. I was starting to get discouraged when the salesman asked if I had considered the Volvo. I told him I really didn't know much bout them other than the people I've talked to that have them REALLY like them. He had four of them. All old Averitt trucks with 600 to 700 miles on them for 17k. First three I looked at smelled like dirty ash trays. Finally looked in the last one and it was clean and wasn't falling apart. Took it for a drive and was amazed at how well it drove, rode and how quiet it was. Only found one minor issue being a small oil leak they said they would fix. Just hope its a good truck for me down the road.
last 1 Thanks this.
