its always smart to keep a stash of food and water, I keep enough food on hand where I can eat decent for a week or survive for 2, I also keep 3 extra gallons of water under the bunk not including the water I keep out for normal use. Only thing I really need to get is an arctic sleeping bag, right now I have a comforter and another blanket which keeps me pretty warm in 30 degrees but -10+....

how many days do you think you can idle on a tank of fuel?

I have heard the 1 gal per hour stat dropped before. Some say 1.5 gal per hour. Generally speaking in the winter you wouldn't be running the AC, so that might save you some fuel, but probably not much at an idle.

It would be my guess that with 200 gallons of fuel you should be able to idle for at least 150 hours. Those with a bunk heater would ultimately be better off if you were in that ###### of a situation.

A good pair of coveralls will keep core temp up,don't run in the extreme cold much anymore but still carry extra long johns, blankets, sleeping bag, most important is water.

It depends on how fast you idle. My Volvo has the D 13 is designed to idle at 700 rpm and keep itself warm by closing the variable geometry turbo nozzle to create back pressures which depending on the load on the engine burns between .6 - .9 gallons per hour. When the computer deems it necessary, it will bump the idle automatically to 1200 rpm for an hour or so to maintain temperature in the exhaust filter, boosting fuel consumption to 1.5 gallons per hour.

The longest I've been stuck is 3 days near Rochester, NY. Once in NE the highway got shut down and 4 of us sat on top of hill in the middle of the road until the salt trucks run the next day. That night we seen a salt truck behind us but he turned around at the county line. We we're just past it. :biggrin_25510:

Always stayed fueled when going into bad areas or you know a storm is coming. Keep you at least 3 days of food and water on board along with enough to stay warm.

I was told rest areas are called pickle parks because from the air it looks like a bunch of pickles parked. How do you know that fancy word 8thnote? I had to look it up. :)
