I think in addition to the gps question being asked and answered, another point was made in this thread. Maintaining a positive attitude, staying optimistic, controlling ones' moods, thoughts and emotions is an over looked aspect of not only this job, but any job or company we work for. What makes things more difficult for drivers is the excessive time we spend just being with ourselves without any other outside company, except for a radio, internet or t.v. at the end of the day. My point is, your going to meet a lot of other drivers, some upbeat and positive, others negative and cynical.

Good luck, learn also in addition to your driving skills, how to also manage your thoughts and emotions. It will make your life so much more easier and enjoyable while your out here.

You might want to rethink that.

I have a lot of long distance motorcycle experience (google Ironbutt) and most of us run 2 GPSes. I run a Garmin in addition to the GPS is my Qualcom (on the truck) and having the Garmin has saved my butt a number of times.

I have to admit, since they have upgraded the system, I am not having the same issues that I was having in the past. I have been seeing alot more detailed info, as far as turns and routes.

Using the Satilite view on Apple Maps or Google maps for trip planning is great. I just check to make sure the qual-comm GPS is aligned with my smart phone... Also, I write my trip out, less on the west coast, and more so on the right side of the Mississippi. I have come to know most of the routes on the left side of the map... Checking weather conditions, and grabbing something off of Mac 30 going away from snowy conditions... I'll throw iron, but would rather avoid those conditions with proper planning.

Dittto... Garmin has ETA, Qualcomm does not. I always add time to the ETA, but not much. 15 mins depending.

I also start with Apple maps. Very easy to get milage and time of travel with various route options. (if you deviate from the qualcomm route, you're on your own!) Not sure everyones issues with Apple maps, I love them. They've been spot on, especially the hybrid view you can see the warehouse from above, the parking lots, drop trlrs etc. Very helpful. Use with discretion!

I always!!!! Look over a paper map also, several times. I only run New England, NJ, PA, CT, MD.."up there" :)

The new upgrade doesnt seem to allow you to slide the screen so you can see route ahead, lost that feature. The Garmin does.

Use ALL the tools together, write down the entite route, use apple maps for clues on structures at intersects you need to turn on. Go very slow when exiting ramps in congested cities, exits can divide into six highways and you will need to know FAST which one you need. Welcome to New Jersey :)

MOST OF ALL...HEED the RESTRICTION SIGNS YOU SEE OUT THE WINDSHIELD WINDSHIELD WINDSHIELD.

My Garmin (Nuvi 465LMT) cannot seem to make up it's mind on average speed. I don't know what it uses to predict average (I suspect the previous trip) but it's pretty easy to determine whether it's too fast, too slow, or spot on. My Garmin has some serious issues with regards to truck navigation (which is why I run it along side the Qualcom) and I plan to replace it with Garmin's newest truck GPS, the dezl 760LMT when I can afford one. I know Garmins are not perfect, but I've used them for years (both in my cars & on the motorcycle) and I "know where the any key is". Geeks will understand! :)

You can get an Eta by dividing your remaining mileage with ure average speed.

This trip I'm on is 460 miles.

    I choose to run 60mph

460 divided by 60 = 7.6 hrs. Check your route and if your majority is US highways, then half the trip by an average of 50 mph

Add in extra for planned stop for coffee, bathroom etc... You don't need the GPS to figure your arrival time it's a simple math equation. You keep relying on electronics your going to find yourself in these predicaments. Don't get ne wrong, I LOVE my GPS, but if it goes out, I won't be sitting on the side of the road confused.
