Can I use wheels from Chevy, Ford or Dodge dually on a Dexter 12k axle? My dad has some 16" chevy dually wheels he was going to junk but if I can use 1 or two as spares I'll grab them from him. Does anyone know if the dexter axles are the same bolt patten & offset of regular dually trucks?
Grab a tape measure and a straight edge. Some manufacturers list bolt pattern and bore size in mm. So you may have to use a conversion calculator.
Depends what year Chevy, but if they are 16's assuming is a '07 Classic or older.. The bolt holes will line up. Should be 8 on 165.1.. Can't recall the offset, but they run a similar width tire. I'd reckon they work..? Make sure they are psi rated to 110psi or so if running 14ply rubber. That be the weak point I'm thinking..
All 8 lugs should be the same up to 2016. With exceptions. (2016 all three pickup mfrs. changed to odd patterns to screw with the aftermarket wheel makers.) The difference is gonna be the center hub bore. Trailer wheels have a bigger bore than most of the pickup’s because they make them more universal fit and don’t use hub to pilot them like pickup’s do.
Yeah, if I recall Chevy had the smallest center vs Dodge/Ford so they'd both fit chevy but not vice versa. but not sure about trailers though. Yeah they are 16's but didn't think about the 110 psi rating. I'd assume they'd hold it but who knows.
Sometime around 2000 they changed the pickup truck spacing to 8x170. Most trailers use 8x6.5 ( which is the same as 8x165.1) . Ford and Dodge have the bigger center hole and Chevy has smaller hole.
I forgot about the hub pilot size.. lol The 12k Dexter dually wheels mine had were 4.77 hub size. Oddly most the "super single" 17.5" wheels are 4.75 pilot, & they will just slip on.. Not that it matters much but I was big into diesel pickup in the early 2000's.. Don't pay attention anymore, but this is how I recall.. Dodge 2500/3500 srw & drw 1989-2018 8 on 165.1 (8 on 6.5) 1994-1997 Ford 250/350 srw 8 on 6.5 1999-2010 Ford 250/350 srw 8 on 170 1999-2004 F350 drw 8 on 170 2005-2016 F350 drw 8 on 200 GM Twins 2500/3500 srw/drw 1990-2010 8 on 6.5 2011 up 2500/3500 srw 8 on 180 2011 up 3500 drw 8 on 210 Don't know all the hub pilots or back spacing. What a waste of brain cells ehh..? Lol
Dodge has always been inconsistent on the bore size. Some are tight some are loose by a hair on the same part number wheel. They have many different vendors make them and put Chrysler stamp on them. Anyone that has had to beat the ever loving crap out of them with a sledge hammer to get them off knows exactly what I mean. Lol!
