Reading some of the shower shoes comments reminded me of what I have done. First off after a shower the first thing I did was spray my feet with an antifungal foot spray. Then made sure my feet were dry before I put on my socks. Right here in my home, I spray my bathroom with Lysol almost every day. I also used this before using a truck stop or terminal shower. Athlete's foot is not the only thing drivers have to worry about in those showers. Oh, and yes, shower shoes are virtually useless.

    Work gloves
    Shower shoes and shower bag
    Iceless cooler
    Sleeping bag
Tablet that you can connect to your phone for Netflix
    Atlas
    Tire thumper/hammer
Emergency money (in case you need to fly home)
    Extra water (just in case)
Flashlight. Your phone might have one, but I like using a separate light.
    Sanitation wipes
If you are driving up north a lot obviously you need a few extra winter items.

    Plastic cutlery and paper plates/bowls
    Plastic bags
At least an all purpose spray cleaner
    I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things.

Protection is a harder discussion. I don't think you can conceal a knife legally. You should be able to keep one in your truck. I don't know there man, being aware of your surroundings will probably be your best mode of protection over all in every state. Keep an eye on people especially that obviously aren't doing anything, like they are just loitering or lingering, looking at you a lot, following you, listen to your gut, etc.

If you see any angry children protesting nonsense in the middle of the road just stop well far away, or turn down another street. Do not drive up close to the puberty kids.

    Have fun.

Athletes foot is the least of my worries. I just don't want to step in unknown goos. It may only be soap, but it could also be other things.

The military teaches you to always wear shoes in public showers for a reason. I just wear flip flops, so I can still scrub, then slide back into them. And yes, of course, dry before putting my shoes back on.

The showers get "cleaned" after every use, but you know how that goes. If you want to trust another person to clean your shower... they probably do it dozens of times a day and it's just human nature to get lazy after a while. They "clean it" then you immediately go in for your shower. Sometimes mirrors still foggy.

If nothing else, the flip flops save me from having that thought, "what did I just step in?"
