i can add to this since i just moved a truck i bought in SC down to florida.. I dont have IRP or IFTA, each stated wanted something different also.. Fl wanted a hunters permit, GA was a hole in the wall, they kept transfering me to ComData for trip and fuel permits and i couldn't get any because you need a license plate in order to get trip and fuel permits.. But SC only wanted to see the bill of sale and proof of insurance.. Going through Ga my dad was behind two other trucks and the DOT waved the first truck and him over, so i had to pull over (i was tailing in my pickup) and when he started asking where was our tag i explained it was a repo we just bought and was moving to Florida, DOT asked for bill of sale and proof of insurance and we handed it to him.. he looked it over and then suggested that we get decals saying "NOT FOR HIRE" put on until we get all of the paper work. I had them in my pickup but didn't put them on.. We went about 20mi and then stopped at a loves and put them on.. When we rolled through the inspection station going into Fl they waved him through, with no tags, or IFTA sticker.. If i could do it all again i'd wait until i got my tags and IFTA before i moved the truck cause it was one serious headach tracking down all of the information.. and i still felt uneasy about moving it.. But i really needed to get it to florida so i could do the work to it.
What would I need...

I bought a truck from an individual in South Carolina on Friday; drove it back to Connecticut. he had it tagged; so I used his plate and proof of ins. you might consider that if it's an option.
If you bobtail you are a lot less likely to be waved into a dot stop for a thorough check of anything as you don't have a load or trailer on.
All I had for my self was a bill of sale and title signed to me.
So if you're able to run a plate at least on the front; you look more legit.
I ran up 81 and went through 3 scales; plus 2 others in N.C. I was greenlit through all of them.
Make sure everything works; including every light. That's the fastest way to get pulled in especially at night. -

In '06 i bought a trailer in NC... went to the state DMV to get a temp. permit.... after hours of screwing around they told me I would have to title and license it in NC AND I'd have to have a NC drivers license to do it....Huh? I hooked up to the trailer and drove to Louisville where my company got me a license plate for it....
