I have a 08 freightliner 400k miles with a c15 cat. on the way from NC to Kansas city it let go dropped the number 4 valve went through the head and blew both turbos. I bought the truck 3 months ago expanding my flatbed business. i got a price of 24k for a platinum rebuild at the shop in hickory NC where the truck is at. i owe 28k on the truck and i am lost on what to do just for a patch job to trade it in is about 17k. I have never been in this situation as long as i have been a business owner and i am lost!!!!
what would you do c 15 cat problem?????

It being a 2008 cat I assume it's a SDP serial engine, I would cut your losses. They are tough engine converted but like they are....a big yellow boat anchor in my eyes. If you have your heart set on it I would drag it home and do a 6nz conversion. It would be much cheaper and you would be much happier.

The only thing is with the platinum rebuild warranty is 3 yrs. The truck is in hickory nc and im out of jax fl so it is a lil ways. How hard is it to get a 6nz
-
You could buy a good used 6nz ready to swap much cheaper than that and have something you can work. The problem with SDP motors is once you fix all that it may be a year or two days down the road you are going to lose a rocker bolt and it will go thru valve cover or head or both and then make it's way to crank and right on out the side of block. I have seen it happen many times with the acerts. They all aren't bad, but when they are have a fat wallet. I only work on peterbilts, I know the 6nz will plug directly to the truck side harness with no modification. 08 and newer require swapping pins 21 and 11 for fan which is a five minute job. Freightliner should be the same.

He'll have to find some trustworthy independent shop out on the road to do that swap if not hook and tow it home to a trusted independent. Truck dealers and CAT houses will not do it the fines are $10's of thousands and cost people jobs. Won't be cheaper than a platinum paying someone else to do the work. It's going to be expensive even doing a patch job. Was in op's shoes a couple of years ago. I decided to rebuild and roll on for several more years. With it being a Freightliner Century and SDP engine to boot would probably make my decision though. Those motors are good for breaking the bank and there are several guys on here who can tell some stories.
maggard359 Thanks this. -
Driver you bought the worst model year for cat ever. Cut you losses. lossing 10k on trade in is a lot better than 24k you will never recover. Make a business decision not a drivers decision.
rollin coal Thanks this. -
That is what worries me is throwing money at this issue will it fix it or put me out of business. But with the platinum warranty wouldnt that cover pretty much any engine issue?
-
I have only been offered 5k trade in which would be a 23k loss if I got to a 10k loss I would jump on that in a heartbeat
-
Do a search on CAT SDP here and on google then decide if you want to platinum it. Warranties are great when somebody else foots the bill. Problem is they don't create any cash flow.
-
Yeah your ordinary cat or Peterbilt or freightliner dealer is out of the question. Like I said the first time cut your losses BUT if you have your heart set on it you have options that don't include being in the shop for the next five years like the SDP would leave you. I still believe you could do a swap and come out better than the patch job.
