That is no longer enough. I have been held up and turned around at the border because my birth cert wasnt enough.
what would you do?

Yes it is enough. And I just talked to a Customs agent not 5 minutes ago to confirm it. If you'd care to, I am sure he would be more than willing to accept your phone call as he is at work right now as well. At a Port of Entry. -
The only time you need a passport for Canada is when traveling by air. Driving requires a government photo issued ID and proof of citizenship i.e. birth certificate.

I cross the border all the time, for personal and business when I was in the truck, I know it is a policy of DHS that all entries into the US for commercial traffic needs a passport, enhanced licensed, a passport card or a FAST card to get back in. Birth certificates are not acceptable and if the office accepts that, he can be in a lot of trouble. I once tried to use my FAST card for entry into the US outside the commercial lanes and the lady in the booth wasn't amused about it but accepted (I think she was having a bad day).
My suggestion to the OP is to get the passport, if getting your hazmat endorsement, get a FAST card for Canada unless you want to run into Mexico (your hazmat background check will also work for the FAST card). Then if you need a TWIC card, have the employer foot the bill. -

I guess the guy who works in the Port of Entry then doesn't know his job.
I mean...It is after all what he does day after day. Checking to make sure you are who you say you are, checking your citizenship and all that good stuff. -
We can argue all day long but posted above are the requirements. Link below

If you'd like, I can give you his phone number and you can call him direct. Like I did....
And got the answer straight from the horses mouth.
Oh wait though...He wouldn't know what he's talking about though even though he's a CBP agent. -
Besides that name one company who will send you there without a passport....Oh wait yours does...supposedly? Right
-
Can't get lost, (well it could, but then you'd have also lost the DL)
And is really durable and will survive the rigors of the road in a company truck where the driver is probably just folding up his birth cert and jamming it into his visor...
Or tossed on the dash where your paper birth cert will get all torn up and battered, with soda, coffee, and food stains all over it, and will, in all likelihood, be completely illegible in just a short time...
That's probably the gist of the conversation the Ozark execs had.
