MN driver, Are you a long haul driver? You average 15 post a day for a whole year. I know I dont have that kind of time as a full time driver. IF you really do Go into canada w/o a passport, What crossing are you using?

What, all i was asking is if your a Canadian citizen or US. If it works for you, go for it, but i wouldn't go suggesting a new driver doesn't get a passport since you can get a cross w/o one.

    I am a US Citizen.

And yes, you can get INTO the US with your DL and your birth certificate. And no, they cannot stop you. Legal decisions and SCOTUS decisions allow it.

I know from reading on the Department of State website and from Immigration Canada's website, as well as personal experience, that, as a US citizen, you can get into Canada with just a driver's licence or birth certificate. However, the US Government requires a passport (book, card, or NEXUS) to get back in for anyone over the age of 16. Are there times when you might be able to get through without it, yes (it's happened to me going into Canada). Would I bet on it? Definitely not.

Please note that I'm describing what I know to be true for driving personal vehicles. From what I understand, the regulations are the same for commercial drivers as well.

Two years ago there was a fellow on here that said he crossed and came back with only his Birth Certificate and Drivers License and I basically did not believe him. So I called the Blaine, Wa crossing and they said no you can not cross with those documents. Then I called Niagara Falls and asked the same question and they said the same thing. I called one other crossing (don't remember which one) and they told me the same thing. Then I called Sweetgrass, Mt and asked them and they said sure, all you will need is your BC and DL. So then I called the director of Homeland Security for the western area and she said that some crossings are lax and they can use their judgment basically. So just because the gov't says so, does not mean it is so. I don't think I would take the chance without a passport/passport card or EDL.
